SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati women's golf team will compete in its second tournament of the season this weekend, travelling to BIG EAST member Notre Dame for the Lady Irish Invitational. The event is scheduled to begin on Saturday (Sept. 23) with 36 holes of play, with the final round one day later. The Bearcats will be trying to improve upon an 11th place performance at the season-opening Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup earlier this week.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The 2006 Lady Irish Invitational features 14 teams converging on the Warren Golf Course for 54 holes of play. Action will get underway each day at 9 a.m. ET with 36 holes on Saturday, Sept. 23, and the final 18 one day later. Joining the Bearcats and the Lady Irish in the tournament field will be Columbia, Eastern Michigan, Georgetown, Illinois, Illinois State, Iowa, IPFW, Toledo, Western Michigan, Wichita State, Wyoming and Xavier. Notre Dame won the title last season by nine shots over Toledo. Cincinnati last played in Notre Dame's event on Sept. 27-28, 2003 finishing tied for 12th.
THE LINE-UP: Cincinnati will use the same line-up it utilized at the season-opening Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup. Junior Hillery Wilson, who missed the opening round at Louisville with flu-like symptoms, will look to rebound at Notre Dame. Joining Wilson at the top will be classmate Allison Mayborg, who paced the Bearcats with a 36th place finish at U of L. Senior Sarah Bires and sophomores Marianne Erb and Sarah Stamper round out coach Janet Carl's line-up for the Lady Irish Invitational.
HOPING FOR MORE: Through just two seasons at Cincinnati, junior Hillery Wilson has already accomplished a great deal. As a Bearcat, Wilson has won five tournaments, set the school record for lowest round and the mark for lowest single season average. In addition, Wilson played in the U.S. Women's Amateur Open during the summer of 2006. This season, she will try to push her game to the next level in hopes of being in the running for a BIG EAST Championship and a berth in the NCAA Championships. Wilson carries a career average of 77.4.
HOME COURSE FUN: UC has a pair of home events on its fall calendar, starting with a meeting with Northern Kentucky on Sept. 29. The Bearcats then host the Cincinnati Fall Invitational on Oct. 16-17. Both of the events are at Elks Run Golf Course in Batavia.
