Lacrosse Adds Cincinnati Native Michelle Platz for 2014

Jan. 22, 2014

University of Cincinnati lacrosse head coach Gina Oliver has announced the addition of Cincinnati native Michelle Platz to the roster. The St. Ursula Academy graduate returns to the Queen City having played her first two collegiate seasons at Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC).

"We are excited to welcome Michelle to our Bearcats lacrosse family," Oliver said. "We have heard nothing but great things about her strong work ethic, on-and-off the field."

Platz is equally excited to return home and don the red and black.

"I'm incredibly excited to be back in Cincinnati," she said. "I greatly enjoyed my time in Baltimore, but nothing beats getting to be home with family and friends."

When asked what exactly drew her back to Cincinnati, Platz stressed the academic opportunities found at UC, in addition to the ability to play at the highest level of collegiate lacrosse.

"The academic excellence of UC's environmental engineering program, coupled with the opportunity to play lacrosse was what drove me to UC," Platz explained. "In looking at schools where I could pursue both lacrosse and environmental engineering, no other University matched UC's flexibility and commitment to helping their students succeed."

Oliver is equally excited, but especially anxious to see Platz's impact on the field this season.

"We are happy that she felt she could help UC could help her succeed in academics and athletics and is a place she could call home," Oliver added. "We are looking forward to her competing for the red and black and making our program better."

Platz played in 24 contests and made 10 starts during her two years at UMBC. She recorded eight goals and four assists during that time and was also a two-time selection to the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll for posting a grade-point average of at least 3.5.

Prior to heading east, Platz starred at Cincinnati's St. Ursula Academy, where in 2010 she was named the Girls Greater Cincinnati League Player of the Year. She was a three-time all-conference selection for the Bulldogs, while also earning all-state and all-district honors from the Ohio Schoolgirls Lacrosse Coaches Association in 2010.

Oliver opens her second season at the helm of the UC program on Wednesday, Feb. 12, when the Bearcats travel to Notre Dame. After opening the season with six road contests, the Bearcats play their home opener on Friday, March 14, versus Coastal Carolina.
