CINCINNATI - After scoring a pair of victories over Coastal Carolina and Iona last week, a pair of Bearcats have been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Senior captain Kelsey Conway and sophomore midfielder Courtney Curtis have received a spot on the list.
Curtis (Mason, Ohio/William Mason) scored eight goals in the two victories last week. She scored three first-half goals to keep the Bearcats in the game against Coastal before tying the game at 11 with 7:12 left. Against Iona, she registered another four goals, two in the first half and two in the second half, as the Bearcats cruised to the 14-5 victory. She now ranks in the the top 10 in the conference in goals (6 th/2.00), assists (9 th/0.88) and points (T-5th/2.88) per game, while she is also tied for the team lead with 23 points.
"Courtney Curtis has been our team's MVP for the last three games," said head coach Gina Oliver. "She really came into her own and has stepped-up for us. She has always been seen as one of our go-to players and now she is playing like it. She's our player of the week!"
Conway (Laurel, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) drew the top defensive assignment for the Bearcats in both contests. She held the leading scorer from both the Chanticleers and Gaels to a combined goal and assist. She caused three turnovers in the win over Iona, during which UC held the visitors to five goals.
"I'm happy Kelsey is getting some outside recognition," Oliver said. "She has been the glue that has kept our team together since August. She's an amazing leader and does a lot for the intangibles of our team."
Conway and Curtis become the third and fourth Bearcats to receive weekly recognition from the BIG EAST. Megan Bell (Parkton, Md./Hereford) was named Offensive Player of the Week on Feb. 25 and goalie Meg Gulmi (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) was named Defensive Player of the Week on March 11.
The Bearcats have one game this week, hosting Detroit on Sunday, March 23. Opening draw is set for Noon at Gettler Stadium.
