CINCINNATI-- Head coach Lellie Swords has announced the University of Cincinnati's schedule for the lacrosse team's inaugural campaign. The Bearcats face six teams that finished in the final Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association's (IWLCA) Top 20 and five squads that competed in the 16-team NCAA Tournament in 2007.
"We are very excited for our 2008 schedule," stated Swords. "We are playing a tough and competitive schedule to prepare us to join the Big East in 2009. We have some great home games that we are looking forward to hosting at Gettler Stadium."
Building a solid base, the Bearcats travel to the State of Maryland three times for four games and also make a Spring Break trip to San Diego during their first season. They are scheduled to play eight of their 17 games at Gettler Stadium.
On Feb. 17, Cincinnati hits the road for the first game in program history at Vanderbilt, before returning home to play three consecutive home tilts.
On Feb. 23, the Bearcats play before the home crowd for the first time against the 2007 MAAC Tournament champion Le Moyne in their first home match. One day later, they host Presbyterian at Gettler Stadium before wrapping up the three-game home stand on Feb. 29 against Robert Morris.
The Bearcats invade Annapolis, MD on March 7 to face St. Mary's (CA). They take on Navy on March 8.
After entertaining Duquesne on March 10, Cincinnati travels to San Diego to play Denver on March 22 and Oregon on March 24.
In the first of back-to-back games against 2007 Top 10 programs, UC heads to Baltimore to face Johns Hopkins on March 27 before returning home to meet 2007 BIG EAST Tournament champion Syracuse on March 30.
The Bearcats start the final month of the regular season at Loyola (MD) on April 4. They play three of their next four games at home, beginning with the April 11 contest against Davidson. On April 12, the Bearcats tangle with UC-Davis.
Following an April 18 trip to Penn State, the Bearcats finish the home slate on April 23 against Ohio State. Cincinnati caps its first season on April 26 at Louisville.
UC will be the eighth member institution in the BIG EAST to sponsor women's lacrosse: Connecticut, Georgetown, Louisville, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Rutgers, Villanova and affiliate member Loyola-Maryland. Set to begin play in Spring 2008, Cincinnati will be eligible to compete for the BIG EAST championship in lacrosse in 2009.
