CINCINNATI - With Lauren Romanelli making her debut in goal, the University of Cincinnati women's soccer team shut out Tennessee on Sunday afternoon at Gettler Stadium.
The game was scoreless despite several great chances by the Bearcats until the 86th minute when Kaylee Dakers found the back of the net. The Bearcats combined down the right side with Emily Hebbeler's one touch pass to Julie Morrissey who was able to find a slashing Dakers inside the 18.
UC had several great chances throughout the game. Alexis Scott was able to slip in behind the Volunteers defense twice in the first half but was unable to convert.
Kellie Pawelko almost converted on a 35 yard blast that struck the crossbar in the 38th minute. Coming out of intermission, the Bearcats continued to have opportunities, leading up to the game winner in the waning minutes.
UC limited the number chances Tennessee had, allowing just five shots on goal.
"We are very pleased with our defensive mentality today, we have spent a great deal of time this off season recommitting ourselves to being one of the top defensive teams in our league," said head coach Michelle Salmon. "I applaud our efforts today and our approach against a very good Tennessee team. With only one game played we must continue to commit ourselves to being known for our defensive presence. We look forward to building upon this game and continuing to develop this off-season."
The Bearcats will host Toledo this Friday at 7 p.m. in Gettler Stadium. Prior to the game, UC will its annual FREE Spring Clinic for players 5-13. Registration will begin at 4:45, the clinic will begin at 5 p.m.
