Cullowhee, N.C. - The University of Cincinnati women’s soccer team opened the 2008 season with a 1-0 exhibition victory over Western Carolina on Monday night at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

The Bearcats dominated most of the match, leading 8-2 in shots with 25 minutes remaining. Freshman midfielder Julie Morrissey scored the lone goal of the match, giving UC the game-winner in the 20th minute. Morrissey took a feed from junior forward Chelsea Kindschuh and drilled a grounder to the far post.

“We looked a little rusty, but for the first time out, I am pleased with our performance,” said first-year head coach Michelle Salmon. “We played a very good, well-coached Western Carolina team that is primed to have a great year. I thought their effort on the field was tremendous but the difference maker was our defense, and that we committed to winning the ball in the attacking third.”

Cincinnati will play next at Gettler Stadium, welcoming Central Michigan on Friday, August 15 for a 7 p.m. exhibition match. The Bearcats open the regular season at home on Friday, August 22 against Bowling Green at 7 p.m.
