The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team topped Valparaiso, 4-1, in a preseason friendly at Gettler Stadium on Friday night. The Bearcats utilized three goals in the first of three 30-minute periods to trump the Crusaders.
UC's offense was in full display as they controlled possession for the majority of the match and had four different goal scorers. The squad outshot Valpo 16-7 and took 10 corner kicks to the Crusaders' three.
GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN
CIN - Danielle Rotheram (Couperus), 10'
The Bearcats built their attack from the back to the front, and Katy Couperus passed a through ball to Rotheram as she streaked through the right side of the Valpo defense. The junior took two touches before dribbling a ball under the keeper's arms to the far post.
VALPO - Kristen Warner (unassisted), 17'
Warner garnered a loose ball on the right side of the 18-yard box and drilled a shot inside the upper-right 90 to equalize the match.
CIN - Jae Atkinson (Mason), 24'
After Atkinson serviced in a corner, a Valpo defender headed the ball back to her on the sideline. The senior took a few touches to control the ball before servicing it back into the six-yard box. The ball's loft was too high for any of the players, including the goalkeeper, and slid under the crossbar to put UC up.
CIN - Laura Rose (unassisted), 25'
On the restart following Atkinson's goal, the Crusaders had an errant pass the Rose deflected towards the opposing goal. The junior battled a defender off at the top of the 18-yard box and then struck the ball inside the near post.
CIN - Kelly Latimer (unassisted), 49'
The Crusader's backline had another errant pass as they tried to connect across the face of the goal, but Latimer was there to intercept and drive home the Bearcats fourth goal of the match.
The Bearcats officially kickoff the 2014 season on Aug. 22 in Birmingham, Alabama versus Samford. The match is slated to begin at 8 p.m. ET.
