CINCINNATI -- The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team (3-0-1) defeated Eastern Kentucky University (2-2-0) 2-0 Friday evening at Gettler Stadium., keeping its unbeaten record intact.
UC was aggressive on the offensive end throughout the entire match, outshooting Eastern Kentucky 24-9.
Junior midfielder Lauren Hettinger (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) and freshman forward Laura Rose (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) each recorded two points with one goal apiece, while junior forward Jazmine Rhodes (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Polytechnic) added an assist.
The Bearcats took a one-goal lead in the 38th minute on a goal from Hettinger. After a corner kick by junior midfielder Katie Greer (Massapequa, N.Y./Saint Anthony's), there was a battle for the ball in inside the six-yard line until Rhodes took a shot that was blocked. Hettinger found the rebound and headed the ball over EKU keeper Erika Wolfer.
Cincinnati scored the dagger in the 87th minute thanks to an impressive goal from Rose. From midfield, Rhodes led Rose with a breakaway pass toward the right side of the 18-yard line. Rose beat Wolfer to the ball, sidestepping the Colonels goalkeeper, and delivered a cross-net shot that hit the left side of the goal, icing the match for UC with her fourth goal through her first four collegiate matches.
Wolfer finished the match with nine saves, while Cincinnati sophomore goalkeeper Kristina Utley (Castro Valley, Calif.) was on point when she had to be, ending the night with three saves and recording her fifth-career shutout and first of 2012.
UC had plenty of chances to open the match in the first half after outshooting the Colonels 11-2, led by Rhodes' three attempts in the first 45 minutes.
Cincinnati will conclude a three-match homestand on Sunday with a 1 p.m. matchup versus Big Ten foe Nebraska at Gettler Stadium.
