The University of Cincinnati women’s soccer team came up short in their first game out in California as Long Beach State defeated the Bearcats, 4-1. Freshman Katy Couperus netted the lone goal for UC, which was also her first collegiate goal.

The Bearcats and 49ers played to a nil-nil tie in the first half as both teams put together a defensive half. The two teams combined to tally five shots in the first 45 minutes with none being on net.

The game quickly changed in the second half as LBSU took a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute on a cross into the box by Elizabeth Lyons, which was kicked into the lower left corner by Eileen Maes. The 49ers extended their lead nine minutes later as Lyons recorded a goal of her own in the 62nd.

But Cincinnati didn’t lie down as Couperus headed in a Jae Atkinson service to make the score 2-1. The freshman’s goal in the 66th minute was the first of her career.

Despite the momentum shift, Long Beach Sate kept pressing and reclaimed their two-goal lead in the 72nd minute, which eventually became a three-goal lead in the 81st.

The Bearcats closeout their California trip on Sunday afternoon versus UC Santa Barbara at 3 p.m. ET. Live state and a free video feed are available. Click here for links.
