DENVER – Sophomore goalkeeper Kristina Utley (Castro Valley, Calif./Castro Valley) produced a career-high 12 saves, but in losing fashion as the University of Cincinnati women’s soccer team fell to Colorado 2-1 Sunday afternoon in the second round of the University of Denver Invitational at CIBER Field.
An own goal by the Bearcats in the 76th minute broke a 1-1 tie and allowed Colorado (4-1-2) to win the match.
Cincinnati (3-3-1) knotted the score at 1-1 in the 40th minute when sophomore midfielder Megan Cravenor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota West) took a pass from junior Lauren Hettinger (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) and hit a shot from 10 yards out for her first goal of the season.
The Buffaloes struck first when junior forward Hayley Hughes scored her first goal of the season in the match’s 8th minute. CU keeper Annie Brunner sent a goal kick to freshman midfielder Olivia Pappalardo, who headed the goal kick toward Hughes; setting up a one-on-one opportunity with Utley.
The UC defense was under duress throughout the match as the Buffaloes outshot the Bearcats 25-9 and held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Brunner needed just three saves to earn the win as UC totaled four shots on goal.
Cincinnati will open BIG EAST Conference play when the Bearcats host the DePaul Blue Demons at 7 p.m. Friday at Gettler Stadium.
