MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Freshman forward Mackenzie Grause (Ft. Thomas, Ky./Highlands) scored two goals to lead the University of Cincinnati women’s soccer team to a 4-0 win over Coastal Carolina University Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point Athletics Complex.
Cincinnati earned at least a share of the College of Charleston Cup championship with the win after going 2-0 in the round robin tournament. Old Dominion University defeated Coastal Carolina on Friday and also has an opportunity to share the championship with a win over College of Charleston later Sunday.
"I'm very pleased about the way we played this weekend," said Michelle Salmon, UC head coach. "We continue to create opportunities this season and this weekend we added the final element to our attack, which is capitalizing on our chances."
Cincinnati took control of the match from the get-go. In the fifth minute of the first half, Grause took a serve from freshman midfielder Christi Howard (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) on a breakaway down the middle of the field and scored, giving UC an early 1-0 lead.
The Bearcats wasted little time adding to its lead. Twelve minutes after scoring their first goal, a Coastal Carolina foul set up a free kick for senior forward Emily Hebbeler (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy), who drove a shot from 30 yards out into the back of the onion bag. The goal was Hebbeler’s third of the season and put Cincinnati up 2-0.
Cincinnati out-shot Coastal Carolina 17-6 and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Sunday marked the seventh time out of eight matches this season the Bearcats out-shot their opponent.
UC tacked on two goals within a 1 minute, 47-second span in the second half to take a commanding 4-0 lead. In the 61st minute Grause took a pass from Hebbeler and delivered her second goal of the match. In the 63rd minute, Howard headed Hebbeler’s free kick from 40 yards out into the net to pick up her third goal of the year.
Grause finished the Charleston Cup with three goals and one assist in two matches. She has a team-leading four goals on the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Kristina Utley (Castro Valley, Calif./Castro Valley) and senior GK Ashley Daniels (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill), who entered the match for Utley in the 67th minute, combined for the shutout and each recorded one save.
The Bearcats play at DePaul University Friday at 4 p.m. in Chicago, Ill. before hosting No. 8 Notre Dame University at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Gettler Stadium.
