CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s soccer team fell to No. 10-ranked Marquette University 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Gettler Stadium.
Marquette put constant pressure on the Bearcat offense for the majority of the match. The Golden Eagles took 22 shots compared to the Bearcats’ 13 attempts. Additionally, MU held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
MU captured the lead in the 34th minute when Lindsey Page moved the ball down the right baseline and crossed a pass five yards away from the goal to Cara Jacobson, who shot the ball past Utley.
The Golden Eagles doubled their lead to 2-0 in the 41st minute when Mary Luba took a shot that bounced off the cross bar and Vanessa Cordisco-Legault took the rebound and nailed a shot back into the net.
Cincinnati’s best scoring opportunity came in the 52nd minute when sophomore forward Jazmine Rhodes (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Polytechnic) served a pass to Grause inside the box. Freshman forward Mackenzie Grause (Ft. Thomas, Ky./Highlands) took the pass and quickly shot the ball toward the goal, but a Marquette defender blocked the attempt to keep MU’s 2-0 lead intact.
UC had two other scoring chances in the 79th minute. Senior forward Emily Hebbeler (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) had a free kick from just outside the left side of the box that was blocked. Freshman forward Christi Howard (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) headed senior defender Kelli Pawelko’s (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) ensuing corner kick, but the shot went wide.
In the 76th minute, Katie Hishmeh served a pass to Luba, who forward the ball to Emily Jacobsen on the right side of the box. Jacobsen hooked the shot toward the left corner of the goal to increase MU’s lead to 3-0.
Marquette capped off its offensive effort in the 83rd minute when Page headed a cross from Luba into the net, making the score 4-0.
Cincinnati plays Georgetown University at 3 p.m. Friday in Washington, D.C.
