QUEENS, N.Y. - Freshman Evi Ranson (Golden, Colo./Ralston Valley) scored her first career goal to lead the University of Cincinnati women's soccer team to a 1-0 win at No. 12/17 St. John's on Sunday afternoon at Belson Stadium.
The win snaps a three-match winless streak for the Bearcats (7-5-1, 2-2-1) and stops a St. John's (8-2-1, 2-1-1) unbeaten streak that reached six matches (5-0-1).
"We had a tremendous team effort today. To get a win on the road against an outstanding St. John's team speaks volumes of how our team continues to improve," said head coach Michelle Salmon. "Andrea Kaminski had a tremendous performance and continues to come up big in big moments and Sydney Barker was outstanding in the midfield."
Ranson's goal came in the 40th minute after a Sydney Barker (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) corner kick was knocked around in the box and found the head of Ransom, who beat Red Storm goalkeeper Kristin Russell.
Ransom became the eighth Bearcat to score this season and Barker posted her first assist of the campaign.
St. John's held a 17-7 edge in shots, but the Bearcats got a great effort in goal from Andrea Kaminski (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville), who made eight saves in posting her fourth shutout of 2009 and the 15th of her career, which ranks No. 5 in school history. Kaminski leads the BIG EAST in saves with 81.
Cincinnati stays on the road for the last two matches of a five-match road swing, playing at Villanova on Friday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m. and taking on Georgetown on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m.
