CINCINNATI -- The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team lost to Villanova University 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Gettler Stadium.
Villanova (6-7-2, 4-3 BIG EAST) took an early lead in the 10th minute of the match when freshman forward Renee Hart sent a forward pass down the right side toward senior forward Heidi Sabatura, who booted a shot past Utley and into the right corner of the goal.
Cincinnati (4-10-1, 1-7 BIG EAST) struggled to muster offensive opportunities until the closing minutes of the match.
Sophomore forward Mackenzie Grause (Ft. Thomas, Ky./Highlands) missed a penalty kick that was saved by VU keeper Jami Kranich in the 77th minute.
For the match, Villanova outshot UC 21-12. Cincinnati was led by Grause, senior forward Evi Ranson (Golden, Colo./Ralston Valley) and freshman midfielder Callie Taylor (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos), who all had three shots apiece.
Cincinnati's best opportunity of the first half occurred in the 16th minute when junior midfielder Katie Greer (Massapequa, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) sent a cross from the right side to senior Liz Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson/College of Charleston), who took a shot from inside the 6-yard box. However, the shot was negated as the referee blew the whistle on Miller for a foul.
The Bearcats were slow to find their offense in the first half after netting just three shots, while VU took nine. Greer paced UC with two shots in the first half, including a last-second attempt before halftime that sailed wide.
UC closes the regular season with three straight road matches, starting Friday with a 5 p.m. matchup at Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J.
