CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women’s soccer team took another step in its journey towards a BIG EAST championship as the team opened its 2009 Spring season with a 2-1 win against Butler University on Sunday evening at Gettler Stadium. Despite coming to Bearcats territory with a 2-0 record, the Bulldogs were handed their first loss as they could not overcome the Bearcats’ solid defense and offensive tenacity.
The Bearcats set the tone early in the game when freshman Julie Morrissey (Abington, Mass./Tabor Academy) found the far post after Kendall Loggins (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) fed a pass behind Butler’s back line, giving Morrissey her first goal of the spring season in just the seventh minute of play.
“Attacking-wise we were extremely efficient in the final third today,” said head coach Michelle Salmon. “Kendall was such a weapon for us, she did a great job finding the ball and impacting the game.”
Later in the first half, the Bulldogs equalized the score when Molly Kruger finished an opportunity set up by Karrie Wyman in the 26th minute. It was at the beginning of the second half when the Bearcats answered after Kelli Pawelko (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) drove a ball back-post off a set piece from midfield to find Melissa Bigg (Limehouse, Ontario/Acton). Bigg, who made a perfectly-timed run onto the ball, volleyed the ball into the back of the net, giving the Bearcats the 2-1 lead.
Salmon was pleased with the way the team played. “We did some very good things on both sides of the ball. Our back line today was outstanding -- they read the game well and were a vital part to today’s success,” she said.
“April Gibson played lights out; she did a tremendous job doing all the little things well.”
“As we go forward into our spring season I am encouraged by how we played today and how focused we were on doing all the little things well.”
UC’s next match will be against Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday, April 8 at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats will then travel to Oxford to take on Miami (OH) on Tuesday, April 14 in their only road appearance of the spring season. They return home to face cross-town rival Xavier on Saturday, April 18 and finish out the month of April against Marshall on the 24th. The annual Alumni match takes place on May 2 nd at Gettler Stadium.
