Dayton, Ohio --- The University of Cincinnati women’s soccer team scored two first-half goals and held off a second half Dayton charge to win their third match of the spring, 3-2 over the Flyers on Friday night.
Heather Herweh (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline), a first team All-Conference USA selection at defender last fall, got the scoring started with a shot from 30 yards out. Herweh took a throw in from Tianna Oliver (Los Angeles, Calif./Immaculate Heart) and blasted in a shot to stake the Bearcats to the early lead.
Angie Meyer (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) got the Bearcats second goal before the half, knocking in a pass from Kelly Rigsbee (Hebron, Ky./Conner).
Dayton jumped out quick in the second half, netting both of their goals within the first 20 minutes of the second session. One Flyer goal proved costly, as UC goalkeeper Marche Gendrew (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) leapt high in the air to snag a ball and while coming down, her knee buckled underneath her and the ball rolled into the net for a Flyer marker. Gendrew had to be helped from the field and was to be evaluated by medical personnel upon the team’s return to Cincinnati.
It was Oliver who took advantage of a second half miscue by the Dayton keeper to give the Bearcats the win. The marker for Oliver was her second of the spring in three contests, tying her with Lisa Stephens (Union, Mo./Union) for team high honors.
“I thought we showed a lot of character to come back after Dayton scored their goals,” said Bearcat head coach Meridy Glenn. “We scored some nice goals tonight and had to overcome a big injury and come back to put the game away. Our seniors really stepped up and showed leadership.”
Following an Alumni Weekend match tomorrow (April 13), the Bearcats return to spring action next Saturday, April 20 when they face Butler. They 4 p.m. match will be held at Metalex Park in West Chester.
