CINCINNATI, Ohio-The University of Cincinnati women?s soccer team went 1-1 in the final tournament of the spring season as they hosted the Cincinnati Invitational on April 29 at Gettler Stadium. Marie Strelka (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) recorded four of the seven Bearcat goals as UC defeated the Greater Toledo Futbol Club and tied Ohio University.

The Bearcats defeated the U-17 GTFC, 6-0, in the first match of the day. Strelka scored the first two goals of the match. The first goal came off of a rebounded shot by Jamie Clark (Maryville,Tenn./Maryville) which was blocked by the goalie as Strelka attacked the rebounded ball and shot it in. The second was a result of a Bearcat corner kick that was hooked in by Strelka after a battle with the GTFC defenders. Kristen Gerwin (North Bend, Ohio/Taylor) scored the third goal of the game off of cross from Lauren Buland (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central).

The second half of the match saw Strelka?s third goal of the game as she shot from 25 yards out, blasting the ball past the keeper. The Bearcat defense kept the GTFC team scoreless and quickly depleted any chances that they might have to shoot on net. The fifth Bearcat goal game from Andrea Haney (Hilliard, Ohio/ Hilliard Davidson) who fired the ball from 35 yards out over the keeper?s head, grazing the top of the net to make the score 5-0. The sixth and final goal of the match came from a team effort as Gerwin made the cross into Haney who made a shot that was rebounded and then booted in by Strelka.

In the second match of the day, the Bearcats took on Ohio University. Sherry Slye (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) defended the net for the Bearcats and made two great saves on two separate breakaways by aggressively coming out of her net and charging the oncoming striker. The Bobcats scored the first goal early in the half.

The second half of play saw much more drive from the Bearcats as Rachel Epps (Grapevine, Texas/ Grapevine) recorded the lone goal of the day. Epps aggressively shot the ball after a corner kick taken by Amanda Ryan (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley). The Bearcats outshot the Bobcats, 6-4, as the match ended in a 1-1 tie.

The third and final match of the day saw GTFC take on OU. The U-17 club showed great passion and enthusiasm as they held OU to a 0-0 score at the half. In the second half of play, GTFC held their own up to the end when OU scored with 25 seconds left on the clock. The club played great defense as, but was outshot, 9-0, and OU went away with the win.

?We did things that were really nice. We rebounded and followed up really well,? head coach Meridy Glenn commented. ?I?m proud of Marie (Strelka) for getting in there and getting her goals. We kept our composure in the OU game and we stayed in the game after they scored early in the match. We tried to support around the ball and that was nice to see. Our mentality was great when we were down a goal and get back in the game. We have things to work on but we?ve made some improvements.?

The Bearcats end the 2005 spring season 2-6-1. UC will officially enter the BIG EAST Conference on July 1st.
