Women's Soccer Releases 2011 Schedule|
May 9, 2011
CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team will play six matches against teams that made the NCAA Tournament a season ago, including national champion Notre Dame, head coach Michelle Salmon announced Monday (May 9).
"We are excited to announce our 2011 schedule," said Salmon. "With 21 returners from last year and the addition of 10 newcomers, we look forward to a challenging out of conference schedule to prepare us for a competitive BIG EAST schedule." For the first time since my arrival I feel we have a veteran team who understands the expectations and the work required to compete amongst the nation's best. We look forward to taking the field and competing for a BIG EAST Championship."
UC opens exhibition play on the road at Ball State (Aug. 12).
The Bearcats will begin their regular-season home slate with consecutive matches against Cal-Poly (Aug. 19) and crosstown rival Xavier (Aug. 21). The team will then travel to Evanston, Ill., to take part in the Northwestern Tournament against host team Northwestern (Aug. 26), followed by a match with Loyola-Chicago (Aug. 28). UC is 2-0 all-time against Loyola-Chicago and 0-2-1 all-time against Northwestern including a 0-0 tie last season.
Western Carolina (Sept. 2) will travel to Gettler Stadium to face UC in the first ever meeting between the two schools. To round out the home stand the Bearcats will take on Big Ten foe Wisconsin (Sept. 4) in a rematch of last year's contest in which the Bearcats knocked off the 20th-ranked Badgers, 1-0.
The non-conference portion of the schedule will wrap up with a trip to Charleston, S.C., to take part in the College of Charleston Tournament. UC will face College of Charleston (Sept. 9) and Coastal Carolina (Sept. 11). College of Charleston will be looking to avenge last season's match when the Bearcats shut out the Cougars en route to a 2-0 win. The Bearcats will battle Coastal Carolina in the first meeting between the schools.
The Bearcats open up BIG EAST Conference action on Friday, Sept. 16, at DePaul, then welcome 2010 national champion Notre Dame (Sept. 18) to Gettler Stadium, before going back on the road to face Providence (Sept. 23) and Connecticut (Sept. 25). Last season UC suffered a tough 4-0 loss to Notre Dame in South Bend, then lost a heartbreaker to DePaul when the Blue Demons scored the game winning goal in the 98th minute at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats did not face Providence or Connecticut last season.
To continue the BIG EAST slate, UC welcomes South Florida (Sept. 30) and Marquette (Oct. 2), followed by trips to Georgetown (Oct. 7) and Villanova (Oct. 9). USF, Marquette, and Georgetown all qualified for the NCAA Tournament a season ago.
Cincinnati wraps up conference play with a three-match home stand against Seton Hall (Oct. 14), Rutgers (Oct. 16), and Louisville (Oct. 22). The 2011 BIG EAST Tournament is scheduled for Oct. 26 through Nov. 6 with the finals being held in Morgantown, W. Va.
The home opener against Cal-Poly is scheduled to begin Friday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. at Gettler Stadium.
