Sophomore midfielder Katy Couperus has been named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll for aiding the University of Cincinnati women’s soccer team to a 2-0 record to open the year, as announced Monday afternoon.
Couperus received the honor after garnering four points (one goal, two assists) on the weekend. In the season opener at Samford, the midfielder assisted on each of UC’s goals in the 2-1 overtime win. She followed that performance up with a game-winning goal in the 1-0 victory at Mississippi State.
Dating back to last season, the Fort Collins native has scored at least two points in four of the last five matches.
Last season, Couperus finished second on the team in total points with 15 (six goals, three assists). At the end of the season she was named to the conference’s All-Rookie Team for being one of the top freshmen in the league.
The Bearcats got a great start to the 2014 season as they garnered a weekend sweep. UC came up with a 2-1 comeback, overtime victory at Samford in the season opener as senior Emily Elsbrock drove home the game-winning goal in the 94th minute. The squad followed that performance up with a 1-0 triumph at Mississippi State with Couperus netting the game-winner in the 67th minute and redshirt sophomore Natalie Smith garnering the shutout.
Cincinnati heads back on the road Friday, Aug. 29 to take on Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee at 8 p.m. ET, but the Bearcats return home for its home opener on Sunday, Aug. 31 against UC Santa Barbara.
