Couperus Receives College Sports Madness Accolade
Aug. 26, 2014

University of Cincinnati sophomore Katy Couperus has been tagged as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week by College Sports Madness, as announced Tuesday morning.
Couperus garnered the weekly accolade after leading the Bearcats to a 2-0 opening weekend. The sophomore midfielder tallied four points (one goal, two assists) on the weekend and was a contributor on all of UC’s goals, including her lone goal being the game-winner over Mississippi State.
Dating back to last season, the Fort Collins, Colorado native has scored at least two points in four of the last five matches.
Last season, Couperus finished second on the team in total points with 15 (six goals, three assists). At the end of the season she was named to the conference’s All-Rookie Team for being one of the top freshmen in the league.
Couperus was recognized by the American earlier this week by being named to the Honor Roll for her weekend performance.
The Bearcats got a great start to the 2014 season as they garnered a weekend sweep. UC came up with a 2-1 comeback, overtime victory at Samford in the season opener as senior Emily Elsbrock drove home the game-winning goal in the 94thminute. The squad followed that performance up with a 1-0 triumph at Mississippi State with Couperus netting the game-winner in the 67th minute and redshirt sophomore Natalie Smith garnering the shutout.
Cincinnati heads back on the road Friday, Aug. 29 to take on Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee at 8 p.m. ET, but the Bearcats return home for its home opener on Sunday, Aug. 31 against UC Santa Barbara.
