PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior defender Kelli Pawelko (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) was named the BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week, the league announced today.
“I’m proud that KP has received this award again; it is well deserved,” said head coach Michelle Salmon. “Her ability to contribute to our attack is such a fantastic weapon for us as a team. We continue to pride ourselves in defensive effort and I’m happy that the BIG EAST has recognized one of our defenders in her effort.”
Pawelko earned the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honor after helping Cincinnati post a pair of shutouts in a 2-0-0 week. The junior also set up the game-winning goal with an assist in a 1-0 victory against Western Michigan on Sept. 5. Pawelko has helped anchor a backline that allowed just two goals in six games this year. The Bearcats are off to their best start in school history.
Additionally, teammate Rachel Barnette (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh) earned her second consecutive appearance on the league’s Weekly Honor Roll after posting two shutouts and making five saves in a 2-0 shutout against College of Charleston.
Cincinnati will stay at Gettler Stadium to take on Illinois on Saturday, Sept. 11 in a 7 p.m. match.
