ABOUT SOUTHERN MISS: The Lady Eagles opened the season with four consecutive victories and are off to their best start in school history. Defense has been the name of the game for the Eagles thus far, as they have yet to allow a goal on the season. Junior Tricia Wiles and freshman Lauren Prewitt lead SMU with two goals apiece, while junior Lindsay Canham has added a goal and two assists. The Lady Eagles are coached by Matt Clark, who has won 107 matches in his 10 years at USM. They are scheduled for a Monday, Sept. 17 match against South Alabama before facing the Bearcats.
ABOUT SOUTH FLORIDA: The Bulls hold a 2-1-1 record on the year, under seventh year coach Logan Fleck. Leading the way for the Bulls is freshman Stine Hagh, who is tied for second in C-USA with three goals scored and senior Jamie Bombinski, who is tied for sixth with two markers. USF is slated to make a trip to DePaul on Friday, Sept. 21 before meeting the Bearcats.
LAST WEEK: The Bearcats match against cross-town rival Xavier was postponed. No make-up date has been announced at this point.
HOFFMAN RANKED IN C-USA: Senior Christy Hoffman (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) is ranked second in two defensive categories among C-USA players. Hoffman trails Leslie Schoeplein by just one-half of a shutout in overall shutouts and stands at 0.75 to Schoeplein’s 0.88 shutouts per match.
HOFFMAN MOVING UP THE CHARTS: With 21.5 shutouts in her career, Christy Hoffman moved past Julie Williams into third place on the UC career list. She also moved into second place on the C-USA list past current Saint Louis keeper Meghann Burke. The all-time UC leader is Laura Kerr who recorded 29 saves between 1987 and 1990. Former Marquette standout Mo Bothwell holds the C-USA mark with 34.5.
GLENN NEARING MILESTONE: In her 19th season as Bearcats head coach, Meridy Glenn is approaching a coaching milestone. Glenn has 196 career victories, just four away from joining an exclusive club. Only 9 NCAA Division coaches have achieved the 200 win plateau. Glenn entered the season ranked 10th all-time in coaching victories in Division I.
BEARCAT FIRSTS: The match-winning goal scored by Heather Herweh against Sacramento State on Sept. 9 was the first of her career. Herweh has appeared in 41 matches in her Bearcat career and previously recorded four assists. She has already matched her career high in points in a season with three, the same number she registered in 2000. With her second goal of the season against Cal Poly, Nickie Luse equaled her career high in goals in a season. The senior tallied two goals in 2000, while recording one in 1999. Luse has tied her personal mark for points in a season with four, a mark she achieved in 1999.
HOME SWEET HOME: Since Meridy Glenn took over as coach of the Bearcats in 1983, Meyers Field has been kind to the Bearcats. The Bearcats own an impressive 101-39-9 mark at home over the past 18 years.
BEARCATS RANKED IN REGION: The Bearcats received mention in the last week’s Soccer Buzz Great Lakes Region poll. Notre Dame leads the poll over Kentucky, with UC receiving votes along with Michigan outside of the top 10. With the amount of cancellations of matches last week, no poll was conducted for the week of Sept. 17.
