CINCINNATI, Ohio ? Charlotte?s Courtney Crandell scored the lone goal of the match in double overtime, to put the 49ers over the Bearcats 1-0. Charlotte improves to 5-11-1 overall, 3-4-1 Conference USA while Cincinnati drops to 4-12-1, 2-6-0 C-USA.
Crandell broke away from the rest of the pack with less than a minute remaining in the second overtime, rebounding a shot off of Cincinnati keeper Sherry Slye (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon). The ball bounced out of Slye?s hands and back to Crandell who touched it twice before blasting it into the left side of the net for the Charlotte victory.
?Crandell is a finisher,? Head Coach Meridy Glenn said. ?We knew if she got in that situation she would get a goal, and she did.?
The teams played very evenly throughout the game, ending regulation with 10 shots a piece. Cincinnati?s best chance came at the end of regulation when Tasha Wagner (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) drilled a dangerous shot directly at the goal, but Shannon Huffman made a diving save to keep the score knotted at zero.
?I know Cincinnatians like winners,? Glenn added. ?It wasn?t the outcome we wanted, but sometimes you?re on the other side. The game is like that. It can be really cruel.?
Cincinnati is back in action at home Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. as they host the Pirates from East Carolina for Senior Day.
