The University of Cincinnati women’s soccer team finished the season with a 4-4-1 American Athletic Conference record and received the No. 6 seed for the league tournament. The Bearcats travel to Piscataway, N.J. this Sunday to take on Rutgers, who finished third in the conference.

Cincinnati, who was picked to finished ninth in the AAC preseason polls, surpassed everyone’s expectations by going .500 in the league. The Bearcats garnered wins over Memphis, Houston, USF and Temple. Arguably the biggest feat for UC was a 1-1 tie versus regular season AAC Champion, UCF, which was the only blemish on the Knights league record.

The Bearcats played Rutgers earlier this season in each teams’ first AAC match of the season. The Scarlet Knights escaped Gettler Stadium with a 1-0 victory by mopping up a goal late in the first half. Rutgers outshot UC, 13-8, but the Bearcats garnered four corner kicks to RU’s zero.

Freshman Katy Couperus and senior Emily Elsbrock have paced Cincinnati’s offense in league play. Couperus has led UC’s offense with five goals and two assists, while Elsbrock has garnered four goals and one assist. Both players have scored a goal in the last two AAC games, and Elsbrock has notched in four of the last five.

The two conference foes will face off in the quarterfinals of the AAC Tournament on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Pascataway, N.J.

The winner of the match advances to the semifinals in Orlando, Fla. and could face Louisville, SMU or Temple. SMU and Temple play in a play-in match on Friday night, and the winner turns around to face Louisville on Sunday to advance to the seminfinals.
