Bearcats Fall in Season Opener vs. No. 49 Indiana|

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision against No. 49 Indiana University on Saturday in its season-opener at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club.
The Hoosiers jumped ahead 1-0 after taking all three doubles victories. The junior duo of Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas/Khabele School) dropped an 8-1 decision to IU's Alecia Kauss and Shannon Murdy while freshman Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) and graduate student Elise Woulfe (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) fell 8-3 to Katie Klyczek and Gabrielle Rubenstein. On court No. 1, seniors Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) and Caitlin O'Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) battled the No. 31 doubles team of Leslie Hureau and Sophie Garre. The Bearcats put up a fight, but ultimately fell 8-3 to end doubles action.
In singles play, IU received two quick points to take a 3-0 advantage. Klyczek downed O'Gara 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 slot and Hureau topped Lee 6-0, 6-0 in the top seed. Witte fell 6-1, 6-3 to Kauss at the No. 3 spot to solidify the victory for the Hoosiers. Poggensee-Wei battled back and forth with Garre in the second set but could not pull out the victory, losing 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 4 position. On court No. 5, Sullivan stormed out to an early 6-3 first-set win over Murdy but could not withstand the IU comeback. She lost in a third-set tiebreak with a final score of 3-6, 6-0 (10-5). With all eyes on court No. 6, Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) fought hard against Jithmie Jayawickrema. The freshman was down 5-0 in the first set before winning four consecutive games to pull within 5-4. In the end, she fell 6-4, 6-2 to close the match.
The Bearcats will look to bounce back on Jan. 23 when they travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on No. 57 Ohio State University. The match will be played at 6 p.m.
