Tennis Stymied by Ohio State|

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision against No. 58 Ohio State University on Wednesday evening at the OSU Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio.
The Buckeyes took an early 1-0 lead following a sweep of the doubles matches. Seniors Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) and Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) fell to Kara Cecil and Kelsey Dieters 8-4 at the top spot while junior Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and freshman Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) dropped an 8-2 decision to OSU’s Gabby Steele and Fidan Manashirova on court No. 2. The junior duo of Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas/The Khabele School) and Carly Wilson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) lost 8-0 in the third position to Grainne O’Niell and Noelle Malley.
In singles action, the Buckeyes took all six points from the Bearcats. Dieters, the No. 41 ranked singles player in the ITA rankings, topped O’Gara 6-0, 6-1 in the second position while O’Neill bested Poggensee-Wei 6-2, 6-2 on court No. 4. OSU secured the victory when Witte fell to Steele 6-2, 6-0 on court No. 3 and freshman Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) also dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Nicole Flower in the sixth position.
Sullivan jumped out to an early lead on court No. 5, topping Malley 6-4 in the first set, but was unable to hold on eventually falling 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. Lee put up a fight against Cecil as the top seed, battling back after a rough start to tie the match at a set apiece. With the match outcome already decided, Lee’s third set was played as a tiebreak, which she lost 10-3.
The Bearcats fall to 0-2 to open the season after playing two nationally ranked opponents. Cincinnati returns home on Sun., Jan. 27 with a match against Miami (Ohio) at 3 p.m. at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club.
