CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati tennis team earned its first point of the season, but fell 6-1 to Miami (Ohio) on Sunday evening. Senior Caitlin O'Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) won 6-4, 2-6 (10-6) on the third court to put UC on the board for the first time during the dual season.
The RedHawks took a 1-0 lead after doubles action, winning on two courts to take the point. UC's junior tandem of Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas/Khabele School) and Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) powered their way to an 8-4 victory over Christiana Raymond and Alix Thurman in the second position. The duo had a slight 5-4 lead before winning three consecutive points to take the first doubles match. The Bearcats were unable to hold on to the lead, however, as freshman Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) and junior Carly Wilson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) fell 8-2 to Chloe Heerden and Ana Rajkovic on court No. 3 and seniors Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) and O'Gara dropped an 8-3 decision to Christine Guerrazzi and Nimisha Mohan at the top spot.
Miami picked up another quick point to open singles play when Raymond topped Witte 6-2, 6-0 on the second court. The RedHawks followed with two more points to secure the victory for MU. Heerden topped Wilson 6-0, 6-1 on court No. 6 and Guerrazzi downed Wille 6-2, 6-0 at the fourth position to give Miami a 4-0 advantage. The RedHawks recorded one more point when Mohan topped Lee 6-3, 6-3 at the top seed.
The Bearcats got on the board with a 6-4, 2-6 (10-6) victory by O'Gara over Thurman at the No. 3 position. O'Gara earned the first set win after surging to a 4-0 lead and hanging on for the 6-4 victory. Thurman evened the count with a 6-2 win in the second set to force a third set tie-break. O'Gara again took control, using her senior experience to pace herself to a 10-6 victory.
With every other point decided, all eyes turned to the fifth court where Sullivan battled Ramona Costea to a third set tie-break, but ultimately fell 6-1, 6-6 (4-7) (10-6). Sullivan came from behind in the second set to force a tie-break where she dominated Costea to win the set. In the third set tie-break she pushed through fatigue but could not hold off Costea who won 10-6.
The Bearcats will return to the court on Feb. 9 when they travel to Toledo, Ohio to take on the University of Toledo Rockets. The time of the match is still to be determined.
