CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s tennis team lost a heartbreaker to in-state rival Miami (Oh) by a score of 4-3 Saturday afternoon on the road.
The Bearcats opened the day by earning the doubles point with victories in two of the three matches. Sophomore Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) and senior Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) took down the duo of Christine Guerrazzi and Ana Rajkovic 6-2 to open action. Senior Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and freshman Lauren Bellinger (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) then gave Cincinnati the 1-0 lead when they defeated the tandem of Nimisha Mohan and Andreea Badileanu 6-3.
During singles action Ana Rajkovic of the RedHawks tied the match up at one when she defeated senior Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas/The Khabele School) 6-3, 6-0 on court No. 6. Miami earned the next two points and pushed the lead to 3-1 when they picked up wins from Ramona Costea over freshman Katya Bure (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) in a 6-2, 6-3 final and Nimisha Mohan against Bellinger by a 6-4, 6-2 score.
Cincinnati returned the favor, tying the match at three after Witte beat Christine Guerrazzi 6-2, 6-2 and Poggensee-Wei won in three sets again Christiana Raymond 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (2). The deciding match then fell to O’Gara who battled back from an opening set, 6-1 loss, nearly forcing a tie break before falling 7-5 to Andreea Badileanu.
The Bearcats fall to 1-4 on the season with the loss while the RedHawks move to 3-0. Cincinnati will take their act on the road next Sunday, February 9, when they go up against the No. 65 Louisville Cardinals. Doubles will begin at 2 p.m. in Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
