CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team earned its first win of the season on Friday, Feb. 5 in dramatic fashion as sophomore Ksenia Slynko rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the final match of the day to win, 6-2, and give UC a 4-3 victory at the Western Tennis & Fitness Club in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Another key to the win was the Bearcats play in doubles action where UC swept the three matches. Lindsey Lonergan and Caitlin O'Gara captured the No. 1 slot with an 8-2 win, followed by Safiyya Ismail and Elise Woulfe winning, 8-3, at No. 2. Cincinnati completed the sweep of the doubles point with an 8-4 decision by Slynko and Abby Mayo.
Morehead State took three of the first five singles contests, tying the overall match at 3-3 heading into the final remaining contest at the No. 3 singles with UC's Slynko taking on Morehead State's Alix Young.
Young put the Eagles in early control with a 7-5 win over Slynko in the first set, but Slynko rallied with a 6-4 win in the second set. With the overall match on the line, Morehead's Young took the first two points of the final set. Slynko, UC's winningest player this season, dug in and rallied, winning the next six points and the overall match for Cincinnati, 6-2. Slynko is now 3-1 on the year.
"It was great to get the first win of the season and do it in such a dramatic way," said second-year head coach Angela Wilson. "With our solid play in the double matches, everyone contributed to make this a team victory. Ksenia came through at the end and she keeps getting better each match. She is so mentally tough."
The Bearcats (1-3) close out the two-match home weekend tomorrow, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. vs. Youngstown State at the Western Tennis & Fitness Club.
