Bearcats Blast Rockets 4-3|
Feb. 9, 2013
CINCINNATI – Senior Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) recorded the final victory for the Bearcats as the University of Cincinnati tennis team picked up a 4-3 win at the University of Toledo on Saturday. It was the first victory of the season for UC.
“I was really proud of how the team fought” said head coach Angela Wilson. “We lost three close doubles matches but used those losses to tighten up in singles with two quick wins. That really put the pressure on Toledo. Ashleigh (Witte) fought back in the second set after being behind 2-5 to win 7-6. Caitlin (O’Gara) lost the first set then battled to win the second and seal the team victory. My upperclassmen, Jasmine, Ashleigh and Caitlin, showed great leadership and it was a great first win for freshman Kelly Poggensee-Wei. The great thing about tennis is there is no clock and you can always come back. We believed that today as a team and that is why we won. Bowling Green will be tougher tomorrow. But today we showed we can do it.”
With the score tied at 3-3 at the end of the match, all eyes turned to O’Gara who battled Chrissy Coffman on court No. 2 for the final point. Coffman jumped out to an early 6-2 advantage after the first set, but O’Gara stormed back to win the second set 6-4 and force a third. In a tightly contested struggle, the two were tied at 5-5 in the third set before O’Gara fought through the final two games to win 7-5.
Three other players won singles contests for Cincinnati, including senior Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak), freshman Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) and junior Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West). Lee easily topped Toledo’s Pia Rygh 6-1, 6-1 at the top seed to put the Bearcats on the board and Poggensee-Wei quickly followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Mackenzie Bowman in the fifth slot. After two consecutive Rockets victories, Witte picked up another win for UC, topping Katelyn Nguyen 6-4, 7-6 (7-0) on court No. 2.
In other singles action, sophomore Kristina Georgieva registered her first playing time of the season after returning from an injury. She fell 6-3, 7-5 to Lexy Pitt on court No. 4 while junior Sierra Sullivan lost to Silvia Carvajal 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 on court No. 6.
Toledo was victorious on all three doubles courts to open the match and take a 1-0 lead. Bowman and Emily Mazzola topped Lee and Witte 8-7 (6-0) at the top seed, Nguyen and Carvajal downed O’Gara and Sullivan 8-2 on court No. 2 and Coffman and Rygh beat Poggensee-Wei and Georgieva 8-6 on court No. 3.
The Bearcats will be back on the court on Sunday to take on Bowling Green State University at 9:30 a.m., in Bowling Green, Ohio.
