CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s tennis team fell to Bowling Green State University 4-3 on Sunday in Bowling Green, Ohio. The Bearcats picked up three singles wins from juniors Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas/The Khabele School) as well as freshman Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North).
“We started slow today, losing in all three doubles matches and then losing the first set in all six singles matches” said head coach Angela Wilson. “But we definitely battled. Courts three, four and five started making more shots and we split sets and eventually won on all three of those courts. Overall, this was a good weekend for us to get us ready for the start of BIG EAST play next weekend. It is about getting better each time we go out and compete. It’s about knowing you can always come back. It’s about recognizing that the details matter. It’s about the team!”
Witte picked up her second win in as many days, coming from behind to top Maddy Eccleston 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the third slot. Poggensee-Wei also notched her second victory of the weekend, besting Mary Hill on court No. 4 by a score of 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Sullivan overcame Katie Grubb 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 on court No. 5 for her first singles victory of the season.
On the remaining singles courts, senior Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Emily Reuland in the top seed, senior Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) fell to Nikki Chiricosta 6-0, 7-5 in the second slot and freshman Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) lost to Katie Brozovich 6-3, 6-1 in the sixth spot.
The Bearcats found themselves down 1-0 early in the match after dropping all three doubles matches. The duo of Witte and Sullivan fell 8-3 to Chiricosta and Reuland at the top spot, O’Gara and Lee were bested by Eccleston and Grubb 8-2 in the second spot and Poggensee-Wei and sophomore Kristina Georgieva (Varna Bulgaria/Varna Sports School) lost 8-2 to Hill and Jade Johnson in the third seed.
Cincinnati will continue its road swing as it travels northeast to open BIG EAST play next weekend. IT will head to Storrs, Conn., to take on the UConn Huskies at 6 p.m. on Fri., Feb. 15 and will then travel to Piscataway, N.J. to battle the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at 10 a.m. on Sun., Feb. 17.
