CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a 6-1 victory against Wright State on Wednesday afternoon at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club.
The Bearcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by taking two out of the three doubles matches. Safiyya Ismail and Kristina Georgieva sealed the doubles play win with an 8-7 tiebreaking decision over Wright State's Kayla Tuscany and Taylor Hines.
Sierra Sullivan turned in an impressive performance with a quick 6-2, 6-3 straight set decision over Amy Nini. Jasmine Lee followed that performance up with an impressive straight set victory of her own, downing the Raider's Kayla Tuscany 6-3, 6-1.
Safiyya Ismail battled to a victorious 7-5, 6-3 straight set decision over Chelsea Girgash. Ashleigh Witte came away victorious as well in straight sets against WSU's Alex Bastock with a tiebreaking win in set one, 7-6, and a 6-2 decision in set two.
Kristina Georgieva's match against Wright State's Masha Peresetsky was sent to three sets after a 6-2 decision for Georgieva in set one and a 6-3 decision for Peresetsky in set two. The highly competitive third set resulted in a 6-2 decision for Georgieva, which gave the Bearcats their sixth point of the afternoon.
Wright State earned their lone point of the afternoon with a 7-5, 7-5 straight set victory by Abby Lewis against Carly Wilson.
The Bearcats return to action on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 10 a.m. when they travel to Akron to take on the Akron Zips in the LaTuchie Tennis Center.
