CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s tennis team picked up a season-high six points to top the University of Connecticut 6-1 and earn a victory in its first conference match of 2013.

"This was a great first BIG EAST win" said head coach Angela Wilson. "The girls played strong and consistent and they all stayed focused. This was Hannah Wille's first victory as a Bearcat and she came out ready to play. Ashleigh (Witte) and Caitlin (O'Gara) each fought off late rallies from their opponents to get wins. I was very excited about how we played in doubles. We played smart and we stayed on task. We were simply making more balls. Now we will have to focus on Rutgers, our next opponent. We lost against them in the BIG EAST Championship last year and we are looking forward to the rematch."

The Bearcats opened play with three doubles victories to earn their first doubles point of the season and take a 1-0 lead in the match. The duo of freshman Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) and sophomore Kristina Georgieva (Varna, Bulgaria/Varna Sports School) did not drop a single game in the third slot, sweeping Marie Gargiulo and Jennifer Learmonth 8-0. The other two UC doubles teams didn’t do much worse, as both teams won 8-1. Seniors Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) and Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) topped Abby McKeon and Lucy Nutting as the top seed while the junior tandem of Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas/The Khabele School) and Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) downed Maxene Weinberg and Srna Stosljevic in the second spot.

Cincinnati took the momentum from the doubles competition and turned it into five singles victories. Lee, Witte, O’Gara, Poggensee-Wei and freshman Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) each collected a win, while Wille picked up the first singles victory of her young career.

Lee took an easy 6-2, 6-3 win over Weinberg at the top seed while Witte earned a three-set 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Stosljevic in the second spot. O’Gara beat Nutting 6-2, 7-5 in the third seed while the both Poggensee-Wei and Wille earned 6-0, 6-1 wins over McKeon and Emilie Burgess, respectively. Sullivan jumped out to an early lead at the No. 5 singles position, but could not close out the match, falling 5-7, 6-2, 10-2 to Natalie Robson.

Next, the Bearcats will head to Piscataway, N.J. to take on Rutgers University at 10 a.m. on Sun., Feb. 17. UC is looking to avenge a 4-3 loss to the Scarlet Knights in the first round of the 2012 BIG EAST Championship.
