UC Finishes Weekend With Pair of Wins

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team collected a pair of convincing wins during a three-match weekend, shutting out both Butler and IUPUI with 7-0 victories on Friday and Sunday respectively.

At Butler, senior Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas/The Khabele School) and freshman Katya Bure (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) defeated the duo of Konstantina Adami and Jocelyn Koester 8-1 to start doubles action. Senior Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and freshman Lauren Bellinger (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) then took down the team of Grace Hyde and Angelina Qin 8-2, giving the Bearcats an early 1-0 lead. Cincinnati earned the sweep in doubles match with sophomore Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) and senior Caitlin O'Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) coming up victorious against Stephani McLoughlin and Kailey Eaton 8-6.

The Bearcats wouldn't look back after the doubles sweep, winning all six singles matches. O'Gara would lead the way during singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat over Kailey Eaton. Sophomore Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) got her first victory of the season over Angelina Qin 7-6, 6-2. Sullivan also picked up her first victory on the year over Jocelyn Koester 6-3, 6-4. Poggensee-Wei earned her singles match win over Stephani McLoughlin 6-2, 6-4. Witte would take down Konstantina Adami 6-4, 6-2 while Bure defeated Grace Hyde 6-2, 6-3.      

On Saturday the Bearcats fell to Ball State in a 6-1 fashion in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. During doubles action the Cardinals took the first point with wins in all three matches. Courtney Earnest and Bethany Moore teamed up for an 8-6 victory over O'Gara and Poggensee-Wei at court No.1. Toni Ormond and Kristel Sanders followed up by defeating Bellinger and Witte at the No. 2 spot 8-4. Courtney Wild and Ashlyn Rang concluded doubles play with a win over Bure and Sullivan 8-5.

Ball State would take their momentum into singles action winning five of the six matches. Poggensee-Wei gave the Bearcats their only point of the afternoon by defeating Courtney Wild 6-3, 6-4.

Sunday at Indianapolis, Cincinnati bounced back from their loss to Ball State and took care of business against IUPUI. The Bearcats started strong by sweeping all three doubles matches. Poggensee-Wei and O'Gara took down Vanessa Whyte and Rachel Swartwood 8-2. The duo of Bure and Sullivan beat Rachael Bridegroom and Bobbi Modesto with a score of 8-3 while Bellinger and Witte defeated Julie Brockman and Abbey Neff 8-4.

Sullivan started the singles competition with the victory over Rachael Bridegroom 6-1, 6-1. Witte and Poggensee-Wei each defeated their opponent during singles match by identical scores of 6-2, 6-0. Bure would secure her singles match over Julie Brockman 6-0, 6-3 while Wille was victorious over Abbey Neff 6-2, 6-2 while O'Gara overcame Bobbi Modesto 6-3, 6-4.

UC (3-6, 0-1 American) returns home this weekend as they host Bowling Green on Saturday, Feb. 22. Doubles play will begin at 3 p.m. at the Western Tennis & Fitness Club.
