CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision at Rutgers University on Sunday afternoon in Manasquan, N.J. Senior Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) and freshman Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) picked up the two singles victories for the Bearcats. It was the second consecutive win for O’Gara while Poggensee-Wei has managed four straight singles victories.
Cincinnati started the match strong, winning the doubles point for the second consecutive outing. The junior duo of Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas/The Khabele School) picked up their third win of the season with an 8-5 decision over Lindsey Kayati and Miriam Zein on court No. 2. Poggensee-Wei teamed with sophomore Kristina Georgieva (Varna, Bulgaria/Varna Sport School) to win in the third slot, taking down Lindsay Balsamo and Noor Judeh 9-7. With the doubles point already decided in the Bearcats’ favor, O’Gara and senior Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) did not finish their match on court No. 1.
In singles action, UC could only manage two victories, narrowly missing the four points needed to win the match. O’Gara topped Zein 6-2, 6-4 on court No. 3 for her second straight victory. Poggensee-Wei, currently the hottest-hitting of the Bearcats, wrapped up her fourth consecutive win with a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Judeh on court No. 4.
Lee could not overcome Petrini in the top seed, falling 6-0, 6-4 while Witte fell 7-5, 6-1 to Gina Li in the second spot. Freshman Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) could not keep the momentum going from her last victory, falling 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 to Kayati in the fifth slot. Sullivan played in her seventh-consecutive three-set match, but was unable to come away with the win, losing 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2 to Balsamo as the sixth seed.
After spending two weeks on the road, the Bearcats will return home for their next three matches. Next, UC will take on Dayton at 5 p.m. on Sun., Feb. 24 at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club.
