CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team picked up its first BIG EAST win of the seaon with a 6-1 decision against Pittsburgh on Friday evening at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club.
The Bearacats were able to take an early 1-0 lead by taking two out of the three doubles matches. The duo of Jasmine Lee and Ashleigh Witte dropped Jocelyn Lu and Taylor Washington, 8-5, while Safiyya Ismail and Kristina Georgieva defeated Pittsburgh's Gabrielle Catanzariti and Kimmy Borza with an 8-5 decision as well.
Multiple Bearcats won their singles matches in straight sets. Jasmine Lee dropped Jocelyn Lu 6-3, 6-2, with Ashleigh Witte topping Taylor Washington in a 6-4, 6-2 decision.
Sierra Sullivan came away victorious against Amanda Wickman with a 6-4, 6-3 decision, while Safiyya Ismail dropped the Panthers' Molly Wickman 6-3, 7-6.
Kristina Georgieva came through with a win as well, this time in a tiebreaking third set. Georgieva took the first set against Gabrielle Catanziriti, 7-5, but came up short in the second set, falling in a 7-6 decision. The third set saw a quick lead that was never relinquished as Georgieva battled to a 10-5 decision which gave the Bearcats their sixth point of the evening.
Pittsburgh earned their lone point of the evening with a 6-2, 6-1 straight set victory by Kimmy Borza against Carly Wilson
Cincinnati continues their BIG EAST homestand tomorrow, Feb. 25, at 4 p.m. when they face the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Western Tennis and Fitness Club.
