CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s tennis team garnered its first home victory of the season, topping the University of Dayton 6-1 on Sunday evening at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club. The win improves the Bearcats to 3-5 on the season. The match was the first of a three-game homestand for Cincinnati, which will host Butler on Feb. 27 and Louisville on March 9.
Cincinnati got off to a fast 1-0 start after winning the doubles point for the third consecutive match. Juniors Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas, The Khabele School) and Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) dominated on court No. 2, beating UD’s Katie Boeckman and Sammi Hornbarger 8-2. Sophomore Kristina Georgieva (Varna, Bulgaria/Varna Sports School) and freshman Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) struggled out of the gate, falling behind 0-3 on court No. 3 before issuing an impressive comeback, winning eight straight points. The underclassmen duo beat Dayton’s Claire McNulty and Erin Filbrandt 8-3 and locked up the doubles point for the Bearcats. On court No. 1, seniors Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) and Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) held off a Flyer rally, winning 8-4 over Maureen Stevens and Carly Peck to give Cincinnati the sweep.
The Bearcats used the momentum to grab two quick singles points on courts No. 3 and 5. Witte secured the first singles point with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Stevens for her fourth win of the season. Poggensee-Wei continued her February dominance, sweeping McNulty 6-0, 6-0. She has now won five consecutive singles matches and has not lost since Jan. 23.
Lee clinched the match victory for the Bearcats with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Hornbarger at the top seed. Lee’s win was the fourth point for Cincinnati and wrapped up the win. O’Gara, the reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week, also got in on the winning action, topping Peck 6-4, 6-1 on court No. 2. After a long battle on court No. 6, Sullivan came out on top over Filbrandt 6-3, 6-4. The junior fought from behind during the second set, but managed to complete a singles match in straight sets for the first time this season.
On court four, Georgieva won the first set over Boeckman 6-3, but could not hold on to the lead, eventually falling in a third set tiebreak, 3-6, 6-1, 10-7.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Wed., Feb. 27 when they host Butler at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club. The match will be played at 1 p.m.
