CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team completed a sweep of the BIG EAST homestand with a 5-2 decision against Connecticut (0-6) on Sunday afternoon in the Western Tennis and Fitness Club.
The Bearcats were able to secure the doubles point, winning two out of the three doubles matches. Jasmine Lee and Ashleigh Witte turned in a 8-6 decision against Jennifer Learmonth and Maxene Weinberg. Kristina Georgieva and Safiyya Ismail came away victorious in an 8-4 decision against Lucy Nutting and Abby McKeon. Sierra Sullivan and Carly Wilson came up short against the Huskies in a 8-5 decision versus UConn's Alexa Gregory and Marie Gargiulo.
Singles play saw three straight set wins for the Bearcats. Jasmine Lee dropped Jennifer Learmonth 6-0, 6-1, with Ashleigh Witte topping Maxene Weinberg in a 6-2, 6-1 decision. Carly Wilson turned in an impressive 7-5, 6-2 decision against Connecticut's Marie Gargiulo.
Both Safiyya Ismail and Kristina Georgieva had their singles play matches go to a super tiebreakinig third set. Georgieva sneaked away victoriously in the super tiebreaking third set to claim a 6-2, 3-6, 12-10 decision. Isamail encountered tough play from UConn's Lauren Wilmarth in the third set and was defeated in a 6-4, 3-6, 2-10 decision. Sierra Sullivan fell in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-0 decision against Connecticut's Lucy Nutting.
The weekend BIG EAST sweep improves UC's BIG EAST record to 3-2, with three conference matches remaining in the regular season.
Cincinnati (4-8) does not return to action until Wednesday, March 7, at 1 p.m. when they welcome California (PA) to the Western Tennis and Fitness Club.
