Feb. 27, 2013
CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s tennis team earned its second straight victory with a 6-1 win over Butler University on Wednesday afternoon at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club. The Bearcats won the doubles point for the fourth consecutive match and picked up five singles wins to seal the victory.
Cincinnati stormed out of the gate with strong doubles play, earning the first point for the fourth consecutive match. Sophomore Kristina Georgieva (Varna, Bulgaria/Varna Sports School) and freshman Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) wrapped up a quick 8-0 decision over Butler’s Laura Shull and Clare Cornelius to get things rolling for Cincinnati. Juniors Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas/The Khabele School) paired together for an 8-2 win over Stephanie McLoughlin and Konstantina Adami to clinch the point while seniors Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) and Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) finished things off with an 8-4 victory over Caroline Hedrick and Brittany Farmer.
The Bearcats’ momentum carried over into singles play where all six UC competitors won their first game. The two freshman in the lineup, Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) and Poggensee-Wei, showed their growth and maturity with 6-0, 6-0 decisions. Wille swept Kristen Haeberlin on court No. 6 to earn the first singles victory for UC. Poggensee-Wei quickly followed with a sweep of her own over Adami on court No. 4.
Cincinnati held a 3-0 match advantage before Witte held off a late surge from Farmer to clinch the match for the Bearcats. After winning the first set 6-2, Farmer put up a fight, but Witte held her off and finished the match 6-2, 6-3 in the three spot. The win was the fourth and decisive point for Cincinnati. Lee also picked up a singles victory, downing McLoughlin 6-3, 6-2 as the top seed.
With two courts left playing, The Bearcats went into two tiebreaks scenarios. O’Gara dropped her first set against Hedrick 6-4 on court No. 2, but battled back in the second, winning 6-3 to force the tiebreak. She fell behind early in the tiebreak, but did not quit, rallying to tie the score at 6-6 and winning 10-7.
Georgieva played in a second tiebreak for the Bearcats on court No. 5, falling to Shull 6-4, 2-6, 10-7. She rebounded after losing the opening set to win 6-2 in the second, but ultimately fell in the tiebreak to give Butler its only point of the match.
The Bearcats will take a break in competing before ending their three-match home stand against BIG EAST foe Louisville on March 9. The match will be played at 5 p.m. at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club.
