Cincinnati Splits Weekends Matches|

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team spilt a pair of matches over the weekend, defeating UConn by a convincing 6-1 score and dropping a close decision to James Madison 4-3 at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur, W.Va.
On Friday the Bearcats and Huskies kicked off the weekend when Cincinnati picked up their fifth victory of the season. UC earned the first point winning two of the three doubles matches. The duo of senior Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and freshmen Lauren Bellinger (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) defeated Maxene Weinberg and Marie Weinberg 8-2. Senior Caitlin O'Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) and sophomore Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) prevailed over Srna Stosljevic and Lucy Nutting 8-5 giving the Bearcats an early lead.
Cincinnati kept it rolling during singles play taking five of the six matches. Bellinger would take down her opponent Jennifer Learmoth 6-1, 6-4 and ended her skid of two singles losses. Katya Bure (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) defeated Shea Flanagan 6-4, 6-0. O'Gara topped Lucy Nutting 7-5, 6-4 while Witte extended her singles-win streak to four with a victory over Maxene Weinberg in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Poggensee-Wei would improve her singles record on the season to 7-5 after overpowering Srna Stosljevic 6-3, 6-3. Natalie Robson would give UConn their only point of the evening defeating Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) 6-0, 6-4 on court No. 6.
Sunday morning the Bearcats dropped a narrow match to James Madison. Cincinnati stumbled in doubles action losing two of three. The lone victory came from the tandem of Witte and Bellinger 8-1. The doubles win for Witte and Bellinger marked it their fourth consecutive doubles win of the season.
Witte made it five-straight singles wins after she beat Alex Huie in convincing fashion 6-0, 6-1. Poggensee-Wei finished the weekend off 2-0 during singles play after she took down Taylor Pinchoff 7-5, 6-1. O'Gara gave UC their final singles point after beating Emily Bradshaw 6-3, 6-2.
Wille fell to Jacqueline Palmucci 6-1, 6-0 and Rachel Nelson would remain undefeated in singles play (6-0) after she beat Bure 6-0, 6-3. Bellinger sustained an injury during the second set of her match and was unable to return, taking the loss to Ruxandra Andriescu 6-2, 2-1.
The Bearcats will return to action when they travel to Ohio State on Wednesday, Mar. 5. Doubles action is set to begin at 6 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center.
