Bearcats fall to Xaver 5-2|

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s tennis team fell to Xavier on Wednesday afternoon at the Western Tennis & Fitness Club by a 5-2 final score.
UC was able to take the doubles point when they took two out of the three matches. Sophomore Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) and senior Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) were able to defeat Alex Brinker and Sydney Liggins 8-4 in the first position.
On court No. 3, freshman Katya Bure (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) and senior Carly Wilson (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) were up 4-1 before Allyson Westling and Andrea Wolf were able to come back and win 8-6.
The doubles point came all down to court No. 2 where senior Ashleigh Witte and freshman Lauren Bellinger were battling it out in a tight match against Xavier’s Christina Di Lorenzo and Daniella Patton. The UC duo was able to get out to a 4-1 lead before the Xavier tandem came back to lead 7-6. Witte and Bellinger took the next game to make it 7-7. In the tie-breaker Di Lorenzo and Patton took a 3-0 lead before Witte and Bellinger won seven straight points to win the match and seal the doubles point for the Cincinnati.
Despite the doubles win, Xavier was able to pick up wins in five of six singles matches to secure the win over UC. Di Lorenzo got the first point for XU when she defeated O’Gara 6-0, 6-4 in the third position. Witte was able to win her team-high 13th match when she took down Brinker 6-4, 6-2 on court No. 2.
Poggensee-Wei fell to Liggins 6-1, 7-5 to tie the match up at two points apiece. Patton was victorious over Bure 6-3, 6-3 to give the Musketeers a 3-2 lead. Bellinger and Wolf were in a back-and-fourth match that went into three sets. The UC freshman was able to take the first set 6-3 before Wolf was able to come back and win the last two sets 6-3, 6-3 to clinch the match for Xavier. In the sixth position, sophomore Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) lost 6-2, 6-4 to Lizzie Oosterbahn in a match that last over two hours.
The Bearcats fall to 8-10 on the season while Xavier improves its record to 13-3. UC will face Northern Kentucky for their last home match of the season on Tuesday, April 1 at 3 p.m. at the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center.
