CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s tennis team earned its third straight victory on Thursday afternoon with a 5-4 win over crosstown rival Xavier University at the Mercy Fairfield HealthPlex in Fairfield, Ohio. Freshman Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) clinched the match for the Bearcats, downing XU’s Lizzie Oosterbaan 6-3, 6-4 on court No. 5.
“I knew going in it was going to be a tough match today” said head coach Angela Wilson. “We have been preparing for this match for a while. Xavier is a good team and it was a great match for us to win. This should give us confidence going into our last six matches of the regular season heading into the BIG EAST Championship.”
With the Bearcats holding a slim 3-2 lead, Wille held strong in the fifth position, beating Oosterbaan 6-3, 6-4 to earn her team the necessary fourth point to clinch the victory. Cincinnati also recorded singles wins from junior Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and freshman Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North). Witte topped Kally Alkire 6-3, 6-3 in the third slot while Poggensee-Wei beat Daniella Patton 6-1, 6-1 in the fourth position.
Cincinnati opened the match with two victories in doubles play to grab a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Kristina Georgieva (Varna, Bulgaria/Varna Sports School) teamed with Poggensee-Wei to take down Alex Brinker and Brooke Dennis 8-2 on court No. 3 while Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas/Khabele School) and Witte downed Patton and Allyson Westling 8-3 on court No. 2. Seniors Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) and Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) were ahead 6-4 over Katie Pleiman and Alkire when their match was suspended.
“The team played great doubles” said Wilson. “We won the very important doubles point to get us rolling in the match. I am very proud of all my players. They competed and fought hard. This is a great team.”
The Bearcats will be back in action on Wed., April 3 with a home match against Wright State at the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center at 3 p.m.
