CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women’s tennis team picked up a home-finale win over Northern Kentucky University 5-2 Tuesday afternoon at the outdoor Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center. The match was the first and only contest that was played at the outdoor courts this season.
Cincinnati earned the first point during doubles play with a convincing sweep over the Norse. The duo of Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and Lauren Bellinger (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) started it off for the Bearcats with an 8-2 win over Yasmine Xantos and Danielle Donahue.
The tandems of Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) and Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) along with Katya Bure (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton), Carly Wilson (Forth Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) each took down their NKU opponents by identical score of 8-3.
O’Gara/Poggensee-Wei and Bellinger/Witte are tied for doubles wins on the team with 12 and both twosomes are currently riding a five game doubles winning streak.
Lauren Bellinger (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) continued the winning for the Bearcats during singles play as she took down Yasmine Xantos with a score of 6-1, 6-2. The freshmen picked up her sixth singles victory of the season and her fourth in her last five outings. Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) quickly put UC up 3-0, finishing moments behind Bellinger with a score of 6-1, 6-1. The sophomore has also won her last four of five matches.
Cincinnati would claim the match after Ashleigh Witte took down Danielle Donahue with a score of 6-1, 6-3. The senior is leading the team in singles wins with 14 and has upped her win streak to five matching her season high. O’Gara would give the Bearcats their final point of the afternoon when she beat Marta Romeo 6-2, 6-2. The win puts the senior over the .500 mark with a 10-9 overall record.
Both Poggensee-Wei and Bure took their challenger to a super-tie breaker and but fell just short of giving the Bearcats a sweep over the Norse. Poggensee-Wei won her first set 6-1 but dropped her second set 6-3. The sophomore fell in the super tie-break 11-9 to Maria Voscekova.
In a similar situation, Bure lost her first set 6-4 but was able to regain her momentum during the second set, also earning her win by a 6-4 score. Another back and forth tie breaker saw Bure fall just short 11-9.
The Bearcats will play their final three matches of the season on the road. Cincinnati will look to make it two in a row when they face No. 71 Marshall on Sunday, April 6 at noon in Brian David Fox Tennis Center.
