CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati woman's tennis team fell 6-1 at No. 71 Marshall in Huntington, West Virginia on Sunday afternoon.

Marshall was able to sweep the doubles matches to grab the first point. The Thundering Herd took their first doubles match when Kai Broomfield and Rachael Morales defeated senior Carly Wilson (Fort Mitchell, Kentucky/Beehcwood) and freshman Katya Bure (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) by a score of 8-0. MU's best doubles tandem was able to improve their record to 12-2 on the season when Anna Pomyatinskaya and Karli Timko bested senior Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and freshman Lauren Bellinger (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome). The Cincinnati duo came into the match with a five game winning streak. 

The Thundering Herd completed the sweep of doubles play after Dana Oppinger and Derya Turhan beat senior Caitlin O'Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) and sophomore Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North), winners of eight of their last 11 matches, in a tight match 8-6.

MU was able to win five of the six singles matches to complete the win over the Bearcats. Poggensee-Wei was able to pick up the lone victory for UC when she defeated Marshall's number one player Oppinger in a match that was close the whole way 7-6, 7-5. Witte lost for the first time in six matches when she was taken down by Turhan in the second position 6-3, 6-0. O'Gara fell to Broomfield 6-3, 6-3 on court No. 3 while Pomyatinskaya was able to drop Bure in a tight match. The UC freshman battled throughout the first set before falling 7-6 and eventually losing the second set 6-4.


 

 

Marshall was able to get two more points when Timko defeated Bellinger 6-4, 6-1 and sophomore Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) was downed by Morales 6-3, 6-0.

The Bearcats loss dropped their record to 9-11 on the season while No. 71 Marshall improved its record to 12-6. UC will look to get their 10th victory of the season when they travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to face Marquette University on Friday, April 11. Doubles play will start at 11 a.m.
