PITTSBURGH – The University of Cincinnati women’s tennis earned its sixth consecutive victory on Sunday with a 6-1 win at BIG EAST rival Pittsburgh. The winning streak is the longest for the Bearcats since the team won seven straight matches from March 14-April 10 2009. The victory improves UC’s record to 10-7 this season.
“This was a big win for us” said head coach Angela Wilson. “Pittsburgh beat Rutgers earlier in the season, and we lost to Rutgers. We are definitely playing better now and are playing as a team. We know this will help our seeding for the BIG EAST Championship.”
The Bearcats picked up singles wins from seniors Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak), and Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick), junior Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West), sophomore Kristina Georgieva (Varna, Bulgaria/Varna Sports School) and freshman Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North). Lee and O’Gara each bounced back from losses on Saturday to cruise to easy victories against Pittsburgh. Lee topped Taylor Washington 6-4, 6-0 as the top seed while O’Gara beat Jocelyn Lu 6-1, 6-2 in the second slot.
Witte won 7-6, 6-1 over Kimmy Borza on court No. 3 and Georgieva topped Karma Parbhu 7-6, 6-3 on court No. 6. Poggensee-Wei picked up her team-leading 11th singles win of the season with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Amanda Wickman on court No. 4.
Cincinnati opened the match in strong fashion, winning the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. Lee and O’Gara won 8-6 in the top position over Amanda and Molly Wickman while Poggensee-Wei and Georgieva beat Lu and Parbhu 8-4 in the third slot.
“We knew the doubles point was important” said Wilson. “Pittsburgh was playing a different lineup today than they did yesterday but it didn’t matter. We played fundamentally good doubles and that is what it takes.”
The Bearcats head back home to the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center to close out the regular season with three matches on April 12, 13 and 14. They will face Marshall on Fri., April 12 at 3 p.m. on the UC campus in a match designated as a black out. Fans are encouraged to come support the Bearcats and wear black.
Cincinnati will also face DePaul at 1 p.m. on April 13 and Marquette at 11 a.m. on April 14 to finish the regular season. Following the weekend, the Bearcats will head to the BIG EAST Championship from April 18-21 in Tampa, Fla.
