April 10, 2012
CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to crosstown rival Xavier in the Bearcats’ final regular season home match on Tuesday evening in the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center on UC’s campus.
The Bearcats got behind early by dropping the doubles point against the Musketeers. Jasmine Lee and Ashleigh Witte were defeated in an 8-4 decision by Kally Alkire and Katie Pleiman, while Sierra Sullivan and Carly Wilson fell 8-1 against XU’s Lizzie Oosterbaan and Ally Westling.
Cincinnati fought hard in singles play, pushing three of the six matches to three sets, but were only able to secure one singles victory. Jasmine Lee dropped a highly-competitive match to Katie Pleiman in a 6-4, 3-6, 2-6 decision. Ashleigh Witte also fell in three sets, a 6-4, 3-6, 3-6 loss to Andrea Wolf. Sierra Sullivan battled as well in three sets before falling 4-6, 6-4, 2-6 against Kally Alkire.
The final regular season home match of the season provided an opportunity to honor lone senior Safiyya Ismail for her contributions to the women’s tennis program. Fittingly, on senior day, Ismail rolled to victory in both doubles and singles play. Teamed with Kristina Georgieva, the duo earned a 8-2 victory against Daniella Patton and Andrea Wolf. The senior day magic continued into singles play where Ismail notched a 7-5, 6-0 decision against Xavier’s Lizzie Oosterbaan. The singles play win is Ismail’s seventh of the season.
UC will return to action on Saturday, April 14, at 12 p.m. when they travel to Louisville, Ky. to face BIG EAST rival Louisville.
