TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 9 seeded University of Cincinnati tennis team fell 4-0 to No. 8 seed Marquette in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship on Thurs., April 18 in Tampa, Fla., on the campus of USF. The Bearcats will continue play in the backdraw on Fri., April 19 and will face No. 10 seed Villanova at 9 a.m.

"Marquette played very well" said head coach Angela Wilson. "They were the better team today. Unfortunately we came out flat and coult not get it going. Hopefully we will be ready to play tomorrow."

Four days after falling 4-3 to Marquette in a five-hour marathon match at the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center, the Bearcats could not pull as close this time around. UC dropped the doubles point to open the match and were not able to regain momentum.

The senior duo of Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) and Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) fell 8-3 to Ana Pimienta and Erin Gebes as the top seed while juniors Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas/Khabele School) lost 8-2 to Aina Hernandez Soler and Ali Dawson on court No. 2. Freshman Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) and sophomore Kristina Georgieva (Varna, Bulgaria/Varna Sports School) did not finish their doubles match played on court No. 3.

In singles action, O’Gara fell 6-2, 6-3 to Gebes in the second position, Witte lost 6-2, 6-4 to Hernandez Soler in the third slot and Georgieva dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Vanessa Foltinger in the sixth spot to clinch the match.
