TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 9 seeded University of Cincinnati tennis team won its second consecutive match in BIG EAST Championship play when it swept No. 11 St. John’s 4-0 on Sat., April 20 in Tampa, Fla. Three Bearcats earned singles victories in the win, including senior Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) who clinched the match for UC. The Bearcats will conclude play at the BIG EAST Championship on Sun., April 21 when they face No. 7 Georgetown at noon. The winner of the match will finish the tournament in ninth place.

“This was a good win for our team” said head coach Angela Wilson. “Everyone contributed today. We will need the same focus and teamwork tomorrow against Georgetown to pull out a win.”

One day after blanking No. 14 Seton Hall, Cincinnati again did not allow a point, sweeping No. 11 St. John’s 4-0. The Bearcats started the match with a strong doubles showing, winning on courts No. 2 and 3. Freshman Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) and sophomore Kristina Georgieva (Varna, Bulgaria/Varna Sports School) won 8-1 over Terri Thomas and Diamond Adams in the third position before the junior duo of Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas/Khabele School) topped Yanita Arnaudova and Gvantsa Robakidze 8-4 as the second seed. O’Gara and senior Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) did not finish their match on court No. 1. The two wins put UC ahead 1-0 heading into singles play.

Poggensee-Wei and Georgieva each earned swift singles victories for the Bearcats, giving UC a 3-0 lead. Poggensee-Wei beat Ksenia Mikhaylova 6-3, 6-1in the fourth position and Georgieva disposed of Thomas 6-1, 6-0 in the sixth slot.

O’Gara found herself in a deep hole against Adams after losing the first set 6-0, but quickly turned her fortune around. She responded from her slow start to win back-to-back sets and take the match 0-6, 6-3, 6-1. Her win was the fourth point for the Bearcats and clinched the victory.

Cincinnati will advance to play in the ninth-place match against No. 7 Georgetown on Sun., April 21 at noon. The Bearcats will try to match their ninth place finish from the 2012 BIG EAST Championship.
