COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Cincinnati tennis team competed in the Muirfield Collegiate Tennis Invitational hosted by Ohio State University on Sept. 14, 15 and 16. Freshman Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) led the Bearcats with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Akron’s Madison Cohen in the singles back draw bracket.
Wille picked up the victory in straight sets to advance in the Invitational, but fell to Ksenia Berestetska of Akron in the quarterfinal round.
Also participating in the singles back draw were junior Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas), freshman Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North), junior Carly Wilson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) and junior Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West). All five lost in the first round of the back draw, but Poggensee-Wei and Witte both advanced in the second round. Witte advanced to the final of the bracket, but lost to Bowling Green State’s Katie Brozovich 8-2 to end the tournament.
In doubles action, two pairs of Bearcats competed in the back draw on Sept. 15, both falling in the quarterfinal round. The duo of Wille and Poggensee-Wei lost 8-3 to Eastern Kentucky’s Saioa Orozco and Carmen Rodriguez. UC’s tandem of Witte and Sullivan fell 8-1 to BGSU’s Brozovich and Maddy Ecceleston.
The Bearcats will be back on the court Sept. 21 and 22 at the Bowling Green Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio to continue their fall schedule.
