Tennis Closes BGSU Invitational

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati tennis team completed the Bowling Green State University Invitational on Saturday in Bowling Green, Ohio.  The Bearcats left with four second place finishes, including junior Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) who finished as the runner-up in both her singles and doubles flights.

A total of nine teams competed in the fall tournament, including Bowling Green State, Cincinnati, Cleveland State, Duquesne, IFPW, IUPUI, Miami (Ohio), Toledo and Xavier.

Witte recorded wins over Daniella Paxton of Xavier and Alex Power of Cleveland State before falling 6-3, 6-4 to Nikki Chiricosta of BGSU in the final round of flight No 2.  Freshman Hannah Wille (St. Louis. Mo./Parkway Central) also picked up a runner-up trophy in the fourth flight, beating out BGSU’s Mary Hill and IUPUI’s Shelby Hullett in the first two rounds.  Wille put up a good fight, but ultimately lost in the championship match 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) to Cleveland State’s Kara Sherwood.  Junior Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas) rounded out the singles finalists when she bested Mengdi Liu of CSU and Megan Morris of XU in the first and second rounds.  She fell to Marcy Huck of IPFW in the championship match by a score of 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8).

In doubles action, the Bearcat tandem of senior Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) and Witte also finished second, falling to BGSU’s Chiricosta and Reuland 8-1 in the final.  The duo beat Xavier’s Alkire and Pleiman and Toledo’s Pitt and Rygh in the preliminary rounds. 

In the singles flight No. 1, Lee beat CSU’s Alex Bush in the first round but fell to BGSU’s Emily Reuland in the quarterfinal round.  She was scheduled to play a third-place match against Toledo’s Lexy Pitt, but the match was cancelled due to inclement weather.



In flight No. 3, senior Caitlin O’Gara Springboro, Ohio./Bishop Fenwick) lost in the opening round to Ramona Costea of Miami (Ohio) but beat out Maria Lazaris of Cleveland State 6-1, 6-1 in the back draw.  O’Gara was slated to play in the final of the back draw competition, but the match was also cancelled.

Freshman Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake) fell to Duquesne’s Alexa Miller in the opening round of flight No. 5 and dropped her back draw match to Xavier’s Lizzie Oosterbaan 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-2).  She would have participated in the seventh-place match, however the competition was cancelled.

In flight No. 6, junior Carly Wilson (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) picked up an opening round s2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) victory over IUPUI’s Rachael Bridegroom.  Wilson went on to lose her quarterfinal match against Mila Shustova of IPFW and the third place match was cancelled. 

In the second flight of doubles action, O’Gara and Wilson teamed to advance through the first round.  The Bearcats fell in the quarterfinal against IPFW’s Shustova and Neumeyr 8-2 and also dropped the third place match 8-4 against UT’s Bowman and Coffman. 

The third doubles flight featured the freshman duo of Wille and Poggensee-Wei.  The tandem lost in the opening round to Johnson and Fillis of Bowling Green State and all additional back draw matches were cancelled.

In the final doubles flight, Sullivan teamed with graduate student Elise Woulfe (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) to take a third place finish.  The duo beat Bays and Modesto of IUPUI 8-1 before falling to the eventual winners Brozovich and Hill of BGSU in the semifinal round.  In the third place match, the Bearcats took down Dennis and Morris of Xavier 8-1. 

The Bearcats will be back in action on Sept. 28, 29 and 30 when they travel to Dayton, Ohio for the Wright State Fall Shootout.
